Why Everyone Wants to Move to the Woods
Moving to the Woods Isn't Really About the Woods
"I'm done. I'm moving to the woods."
If you're Gen X, you've probably said that at least once this month.
Usually after:
- sitting in traffic for an hour because someone forgot how merging works
- resetting a password for the third damn time
- getting another scam text
- opening one more medical bill
- dealing with Karen and her HOA bylaws about the approved shade of beige for your mailbox
- hearing, "Hey...can I ask you a quick question?"
No.
No, you may not.
The funny thing is...
we're not actually obsessed with cabins.
We're obsessed with the fantasy that, for once, nobody needs a damn thing from us.
It's Not That We Can't...
It's That We Don't Fucking Wanna Anymore.
That's the part people get wrong.
Gen X isn't incapable.
We're probably the most adaptable generation on the planet.
We drank from the garden hose.
We survived rotary phones, dial-up internet, floppy disks, cassette tapes, CDs, DVDs, smartphones, streaming, social media, cloud computing, and now AI.
Hell, some of us helped build the technology everyone else complains about.
We can figure it out.
That's never been the problem.
The problem is...
we're tired of figuring everything out for everybody else.
We don't know when we became the designated adult.
The fixer.
The problem solver.
The backup plan.
The emotional support human.
We're still showing up.
We're just fresh out of enthusiasm.
We're Not Anti-People.
We're Anti-Bullshit.
We don't hate people.
We hate unnecessary people problems.
We hate meetings that should've been emails.
Passwords that expire every six weeks.
QR codes for menus.
Customer service bots.
Subscription fees for everything.
Self-checkout yelling at us like we personally offended the machine.
The guy doing fifteen under in the left lane.
The HOA president who's apparently training for the Neighborhood Olympics.
The phrase,
"Can you hop on a quick Zoom?"
No.
We're trying to hop into the woods.
There's a difference.
Life Doesn't Stop Asking
Here's the part that hits a little closer to home.
We're still working.
Still paying bills.
Still trying to save for retirement...assuming retirement isn't just another urban legend.
Some of us are helping aging parents.
Some are helping adult kids.
Some are running businesses.
Most of us are doing a little bit of everything.
Life just keeps stacking responsibilities like somebody's playing Jenga with our sanity.
It's not that we can't handle it.
We've been handling it since we were old enough to let ourselves in the front door.
We're just really, really tired of pretending this pace is normal.
The Woods Sound Better Every Year
Let's be honest.
The dream isn't living off the grid.
We know we'd miss decent coffee.
And probably Amazon by Day Three.
The dream is disappearing.
Not forever.
Just long enough that nobody can ask us for one more favor.
No notifications.
No meetings.
No passwords.
No group texts.
No "while I've got you..."
No forwarding address.
If you need us...
Sorry.
We're unavailable.
Tell Bigfoot your problems.
Hopefully he's a better listener.
And if Bigfoot turns out to be a pain in the ass neighbor?
We'll move deeper into the woods.
Frequently Asked Questions About Moving to the Woods
Why do so many people dream about moving to the woods?
For many people, moving to the woods represents escaping constant stress, responsibilities, and the endless demands of modern life—not necessarily living off the grid.
Is wanting to move away a sign of burnout?
Sometimes. It can also reflect emotional exhaustion, decision fatigue, or simply wanting a break from constant responsibilities and overstimulation.
Why does modern life feel so overwhelming?
Many people juggle work, family, finances, technology, and nonstop notifications, leaving very little time to recharge.
Do people really want to leave society behind?
Usually not. Most people simply want peace, fewer interruptions, and the feeling that they're not responsible for everything all the time.
2SB Survival Tip
If you've started browsing cabins in the middle of nowhere...
Don't panic.
You're probably not having a midlife crisis.
You're just mentally drafting your Irish goodbye.
Maybe nobody actually wants to disappear forever.
Maybe we just want one place where nobody expects us to fix it, answer it, schedule it, update it, or carry it.
Until then...
We'll keep daydreaming about that little cabin in the woods.
No cell service.
No forwarding address.
Just us, Bigfoot, and the kind of peace our tired souls have been trying to find for years.
If Bigfoot needs something...
We're moving to the next mountain.
